VALUES AND GOALS
With over 20 years of experience working with clients from Eastern Asia, Western Europe and South America, Sarah Shively is familiar with the issues facing international employees. She creates an environment of professional consideration while meeting with clients at their convenience. She strives to increase the productivity, professionalism and comfort of her clients, and in doing so, she improves the business climate of the companies they represent. Having recently moved to the Portland area from New York City, Sarah taught in the American Language Program at Columbia University and owned an intercultural consulting business in New York.
Realistic, attainable and optimal goal setting: Employers and employees can appreciate the gains in language learning the more they clarify goals. Each series represents a particular project, grammar focus, writing skill, pronunciation issue, or intercultural competence exchange. Future series build on the previous ones or take on new direction as client, employer, and consultant continually evaluate and mark progress.
Discounts for series of multiple sessions are contingent upon full payment by the end of the first session.
The title may change depending on the situation, but the professionalism and personal attention given to each client is nonpareil. She has also worked individually with international business and professional clients for more than 18 years. Her client list includes Sidley Austin LLP, UBS, Deutsche Bank, Metlife, SAP, Mount Sinai Hospital, Volvo and Cemex. As a Presentation Specialist, Sarah draws on her acting and teaching background to help native and non-native speakers of English address work-related performance situations. These include pitch and presentation preparation, accent reduction, voice centering, executive presence and strategies to cope with performace anxiety. Sarah holds an MFA from the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of North Carolina. Her personalized sessions give clients the self-awareness to identify and move past compromising issues, the tools to best prepare materials and the support and practice necessary to succeed.
"Intermittently, over the last few years, I have used Sarah for voice training lessons. She has been an invaluable resource as I explore using the phone as a communication tool. The techniques and processes I have learned and discovered through her instruction have been instrumental in helping me to grow. In general, I would strongly encourage anyone interested in pursuing voice, language or acting lessons in the Portland area (or elsewhere) to look up Sarah."
“Sarah's qualities as a professional and person make her not only one of the best English teachers I’ve had, but one of the most caring and empathetic persons I have had the pleasure to meet and spend time with. She tutored me while I was doing my master's at Columbia University, and surely our forcefully weekly meetings helped get me through the semesters of my intensive course work. I am sure she will succeed in any endeavor she has to face." April 7, 2015
“Learning a new language can be very challenging especially for experienced professionals. In my case, I was trying to learn the language skills that would allow me to have a professional voice in the marketing/communications fields, which require the highest academic standards. Sarah was able to understand my specific needs and helped me gradually develop the competencies that are necessary for expressing complex ideas in English. She is also very dedicated and extremely friendly. I highly recommend Sarah." April 6, 2015
“I have been very impressed by the work Sarah has been doing with her classes incorporating technology such as digital storytelling. She is able to engage and motivate her students in creative new ways that provide them with a greater sense of autonomy and responsibility for their own learning.”
“Sarah is more than an educational mentor, but a life mentor as well. She encourages her students to be the best that they can be. She has patience and motivates her students to achieve all of their goals and then some. Sarah will make you improve not just your English, but also your soul.”
“Sarah is an excellent teacher. She put effort into teaching us how to use English correctly and in how to become elequent. She made each session interesting and inspiring due to her creativity and innovativeness. Our English lessons generally involved a lot of discussions to make us talk more and to give us an understanding of the diversity of the United States. We were taught about American contemporary society, cultural structures, geography, history, the modern American presidency and much more.”
